Our 2026 MAL Has Commenced!

It's time for the BSY Community Official MAL (make-a-long)! Our Facebook group MAL is hosted by our lovely Admins, Sam & Alisha. Each year around January or February our admins choose a pattern that spans over knit and crochet craft; then we all use our Bad Sheep Yarn stash or new favorite colorways to make a group project. These patterns are always relatively easy for multiple skill levels so everyone can join the fun!

When: Cast-On date is February 20th and we finish whenever we please!

What are we making:
Our main pattern this year is the VL Scarf by Violet Loops. She has the same project for us here:  knit, crochet, and tunisian crochet!
This pattern is not only made for multiple crafts but multiple options as well. Whichever craft you choose, you will have the option to make a scarf, a cowl, or an infinity cowl. You can make your favorite for the MAL!

It's fun when we can all make the same thing but we also have some free pattern options if that's what works for you this year. Both are very similar to our main pattern!

Woodland Men's Scarf by Debbie Field for Crochet.
Or the Halfsie Scarf by Purl SoHo for Knit.

Timeline: There isn't one! Since we start our MAL at the beginning of the year, our goal is to make something that is for the fun of it with low pressure. Can't make the start date? That's okay. Don't finish in time? That's okay too! We are all usually sharing our progress online for about a month. But if life gets in the way and you don't finish that fast, we will still love you. :)

Yarn Requirements:
All three patterns suggest different yardages. I recommend getting the pattern you want to make and then checking out the yardage and yarn requirements there.
For all the patterns you would need two colorways, one main and one contrast.
I've made a few suggestions here! These are not kits, but you should be able to see a side by side. For example: Fated Mates and Aquamarine look lovely together so I put them next to each other on the page. The same goes for Foxglove and Currer Bell.

For the VL Scarf:
Yardage requirements change depending on if you make the scarf, cowl, or infinity Cowl. But you will need roughly two skeins each of DK and Suri Alpaca. You can see some yarn suggestions here!

For the Woodland Scarf: This pattern calls for Aran weight but you can use Worsted weight. You will need 4 skeins total, 2 for a main color and 2 for a contrast.

For the Halfsie Scarf: This pattern calls for 2 skeins of fingering weight. Their yardages are just a tad bit higher than the yardage on our skeins (10 yards more). You can easily make this scarf just an wee bit shorter and still be lovely. If you want to get that extra bit of yardage you can pick mini for that little bit of length. Be sure to have a good bit of skein alternating if you choose that route.

After we pick our project and gather our yarn and tools, we all start together on February 20th! Be sure to post photos of your progress or if you need any help on the group so we can support each other with many hearts, likes, and words of encouragement. Join the BSY Community Official Facebook group HERE and leave a comment letting us know if you're joining the fun!

Do you have the names of the potential color pairings u show for the MAL? I like the first one of blues.
And you can use any weight you prefer and part doesn’t have to be alpaca, correct??
