Christmas & Holiday Yarn: Festive Colorways and What to Make

A Christmas yarn color palette is centered around shades that evoke holiday nostalgia. If you want to use holiday yarn for gifts, here’s our tip: cast on by mid-November!
I don’t know about you, but the first cold snap of the season arrives hand-in-hand with the urge to make something red and festive. In this guide, we’ll unwrap what colors define a Christmas palette; celebrate our holiday colorways; explore what you can actually make by December 24 (think: small projects you can finish in a weekend); demystify yarn advent calendars; and share our care tips for reds and deep greens. A cheery word of Christmas caution: our hand-dyed holiday colorways do sell rather quickly — so let’s be on our merry way!
What Makes a Yarn Read “Christmas”?
Christmas yarn colors are less about the colors themselves, and more about that nostalgic heartstring-tug you feel as soon as you see them. Picture a lively palette of vibrant cranberry and holly reds; calming pine and evergreens; earthy gingerbread browns; sugar-plum purples; and snow whites and icy blues. And don’t forget that magical touch of gold or silver shimmer you can only get from Christmas sparkle yarn. You can pick a festive tonal (one color shifting in shade) — or enjoy the whole holiday vibe in one Christmas variegated yarn skein (multiple colors in repeating or irregular sections). Both bring the merriment you’re after!
Our Christmas & Holiday Colorways
Christmas Carol is BSY’s classic red-green-white Christmas variegated yarn — with surprise touches of blue, gold, brown, and grey speckles. This festive colorway captures the warmth and joy of the holiday season, making it one of our all-time favorites.

If you’re looking for something cool-toned, Festival of Lights is a striking cobalt blue that glows with holiday spirit. This looks absolutely magical in our Sparkle DK base, so don’t wait too long if it’s your style — it will only be available while supplies last.

If you’re in the mood for a Christmas variegated yarn that’s more playful, Sugar Plum Fairies shimmers like a magical dance from the Land of Sweets. A delightful mix of mauve, plum, and dusty rose, each stunning skein is accented with gold and blue.
Red Rider is for stitchers who want a quintessential Christmas-red yarn that’s semi-solid. Expect the sumptuous, cool undertones to make your winter projects timeless — and your holiday knits shine with good cheer.

Quick Christmas Makes That Will Be Done by the 24th

The best advice we can give you to help save your sanity? Be realistic about your timeline! Christmas might seem far away now, but it has a way of sneaking up faster when you’ve devoted your gift list to handmade items. Gift socks, for instance, need about three weeks-worth of evenings — while a hat needs one. If you plan accordingly though, you’ll be just fine.
Here are some holiday yarn projects, ordered by how quickly you can make them:
One to two evenings:
- A chunky hat in bulky
- Our Jester Cowl crochet pattern uses 2 skeins of bulky and makes a cute stocking stuffer-sized gift
Two evenings:
- A cozy cowl in Worsted
- Adorable mini stockings and other yarn Christmas ornaments from minis
More than two evenings:
- Our Intertwined Knit patterns: Depending on how much time and yarn you want to use, you can make the whole hat, cowl and mittens bundle — or pick one item (just the hat; the cowl; or the mittens) to make for a quick gift.
Three weeks-worth of evenings:
- Festive socks in Fingering (choose your Christmas sock yarn in our fingering base)
Yarn Advent Calendars and Holiday Gifting
A yarn advent calendar is the same concept as a regular advent calendar, but instead of a thin box with chocolates tucked behind cardboard windows, imagine a box of 24-25 mini skeins — one per day — each usually accompanied with a pattern. It’s charming, exciting, and has become something of a December ritual for stitchers. Although we are taking an advent break in the year 2026, we have put our whole hearts into making creative advents the past 3 years.
Pro tip: If you’re gifting, we suggest a mini set or a single skein of a holiday colorway with a gift card.
Caring for Reds and Deep Greens
Saturated reds and deep greens can release a little excess dye on the first wash. This is totally normal — so if you expect and prep for it, you’ll be just fine. (If you’re really worried about color bleeding, you can always use a color catcher sheet when you’re washing.)
What to do: Wash your finished red or green project in cool water. You can wash your piece alone or with like colors. Either way, we recommend using a bit of wool wash. Definitely browse our handy wash guide for more details on gentle washing, drying, and storing techniques to help your holiday yarn project live its best life.
